Uganda:First licensed takaful operator receives Shariah certification

| 21 Jul 2026

Tamini General Insurance, Uganda's first licensed takaful operator and a member of the Al Salaam Africa Group, has received Shariah certification from Bahrain-based Shariyah Review Bureau (SRB) for its portfolio of takaful products.

SRB conducted an independent, detailed review of Tamini General Insurance’s takaful products and supporting governance framework to ensure compliance with recognised Shariah principles. Beyond the initial certification, SRB will continue providing Shariah Supervisory Board and advisory services, supporting the company on governance matters, new product development, and ongoing Shariah compliance as its business evolves, according to a media statement carried on the Zawya platform.

Commenting on the certification, Mr Mohamud M Omar, Tamini General Insurance CEO, said, "Launching Uganda's first takaful operator is a significant milestone for both our company and the country's financial services sector. It was important for us that our products undergo an independent Shariah review and certification process to provide confidence to our policyholders and stakeholders.”

He added that working with the SRB would further strengthen the company’s Shariah governance framework as it continues to expand its operations and introduce new takaful solutions to the Ugandan market.

Tamini General Insurance was licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda in November 2025 and officially launched in March 2026, according to a statement.

SRB, licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of Bahrain, has been providing Shariah governance solutions to Islamic financial institutions for more than 20 years. Today, SRB provides Shariah governance services to approximately 72% of the takaful and cooperative insurance operators in Saudi Arabia, making it one of the region's leading Shariah advisors to the Islamic insurance industry.
