Tunisia:Unified auto bureau makes US$1.56m motor insurance payouts in 1H2025

| 25 Nov 2025

The Tunisian Unified Automobile Bureau (BUAT) paid out TND4.6m ($1.56m) in compensation to victims of road accidents involving foreign vehicles in Tunisia during the first half of 2025.

A total of 665 compensation claims were submitted to Tunisian insurers in the first six months of this year relating to accidents that caused bodily injury and property damage, reported La Presse de Tunisie, citing data from BUAT.

The compensation falls within the scope of the Bureau's mission related to motor insurance certificates (green and orange cards). The green card is for the international Green Card system used in many countries in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, while the orange card is specifically for the Orange Card system, which covers Arab countries.

BUAT is the national body in Tunisia that oversees the international motor insurance card system in the country. It manages claims involving foreign vehicles and the issuance of international insurance certificates.

To improve services and strengthen the fight against certificate forgery, the Bureau has implemented an online system for issuing green and orange cards. An agreement has also been signed with Tunisian Customs to strengthen the control of insurance documents upon entry into Tunisia and better protect accident victims.

The annual insurance compensation paid by BUAT averaged between TND7m and TND8m over the past three years.

Overall, the proposed changes aim to accelerate digital transformation in claims management, strengthen sector practices, enhance market stability, and build greater trust between insurers and their customers.
