Algeria:Insurance market premiums grow by 14% in 1Q2025

Algeria's insurance market registered a 14% increase in the first quarter of the year compared to 1Q2024, dominated by the general insurance business.

The National Insurance Council (CNA) released the insurance sector’s first quarter results which show that the market GWP reached DZD53.5bn ($411.5m) in 1Q2025 compared to DZD49bn in the corresponding quarter in 2024.

Property and casualty insurance business accounted for over 82% of the market premium income and stood at DZD47bn, registering a growth rate of almost 15% over 1Q2024. Personal lines, including life insurance business, reached DZD6.5bn, recording an increase of 8.5% from 1Q2024 and accounting for 11.4% of the market overall premiums.

Claims paid for the period increased by almost 3% as they reached DZD16bn in 1Q2025 from DZD15.5bn in the first quarter of the previous year. Property and casualty paid claims commanded over 88% of the gross paid claims as they stood at DZD14bn in 1Q2025 versus DZD13.9bn in 1Q2024, up by 1.7%.

Takaful business surges from a modest base

Takaful contributions in the first quarter of the year reached DZD234m, around 0.4% of the market GWP, compared with DZD113.6m in 1Q2024, registering a jump of 106.3%. General takaful contributions amounted to DZD129m (around 55% of gross contributions) compared to DZD72.6m in 1Q2024, a 78% increase. Family takaful contributions grew at a faster pace of 157% as they reached DZD105m compared with DZD41m.

General takaful paid claims reached DZD18m in the first quarter of the year against DZD16m in 1Q2024, a rise of around 14%. For the same quarter, family takaful paid claims reached DZD1.2m versus DZD755,000, an increase of 53%.
