The Ministry of Finance has revealed that the General Insurance Committee (CGA) had conducted on-site inspections to investigate why several insurance companies refuse to cover vehicles that are over 20 years old.
In this context, the Ministry announced that it had begun to develop a draft revision of several articles of the Insurance Code, to address practical difficulties in motor insurance and better protect the rights of policyholders, reported La Presse.
These details are set out in an official response dated 12 March by the Minister of Finance to a question posed by lawmaker Hatem Lebawi about the refusal of insurers in Kasserine Governorate to insure older vehicles.
The Ministry, in its response, explained that inspection teams have indeed recorded cases of refusal or of contracts being subject to prior approval by the technical departments of head offices. When questioned, the companies concerned explained that they aimed to reduce road accidents and ensure public safety. They also asserted that subjecting these vehicles to prior approval for coverage helps limit risks. Furthermore, some applications to purchase motor insurance were refused due to owners failing to present a vehicle inspection certificate.
