Tunisia:Road accident fatalities rise by 10%

| 14 Jul 2026

The number of people killed in road accidents in Tunisia has increased by 10.3% since the beginning of the year, despite a decrease in the total number of accidents, according to statistics published by the National Road Safety Observatory.

In total, 665 people lost their lives in traffic accidents between 1 January and 11 July, compared to 603 during the corresponding period in 2025. However, the number of accidents fell by 19.1%, from 2,951 to 2,388. The number of injured also decreased by 18.7%, with 3,119 injuries recorded up to 11 July, compared to 3,836 a year earlier.

Excessive speed remains the leading cause of road deaths, with 257 fatalities and 751 injuries. Inattention, meanwhile, caused 98 deaths and 776 injuries.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are involved in nearly 50% of road accidents in Tunisia, according to the Observatory.

To improve road safety, the Technical Agency for Land Transport (ATTT) is preparing to enforce the registration of motorcycles and subject them to periodic technical inspections.

The reform includes raising the technical requirements applicable to motorcycles sold in Tunisia. The ATTT wants to ensure that motorcycles meet national standards and international safety conventions. The authorities will also tackle the problem of a high number of vehicles on the road without a valid roadworthiness certificate.

The reform is part of the new national multi-sectoral road safety strategy for 2025-2034, launched by the Ministry of the Interior in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the National Road Safety Observatory, and the World Health Organization.

In the insurance sector, Finance Minister Ms Michket Slama Khaldi announced earlier this year measures aimed at resolving some insurance companies' refusal to insure motorcycles, particularly those over 50 cc.
