Oman: Damages from cyclone Shaheen estimated up to $130m

Cyclone Shaheen, which battered Oman in October, caused severe damage in the Batinah and Muscat governorates, with the infrastructural damage estimated to be OMR50m ($130m), said media reports. The loss estimate, provided by a retired civil engineer at the Ministry of Defence, includes damage to roads, properties, public facilities, homes and vehicles.
 
Insurance companies in Oman expect to receive a large number of claims due to the damages caused by the cyclone.
 
Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik announced the establishment of the National Fund for Emergencies to tackle the aftermath of Shaheen and similar natural disasters in the future. M
