Members of the Union of Algerian Insurance and Reinsurance Companies have met to discuss solutions on how to comply with a new Finance Act which will require them to collect an environment tax on behalf of the government.
The tax, which is set to take effect this year, will be collected from owners of vehicles through their motor insurance policies. The number of vehicles involved is about 6.5m.
The tax will range from DZD1,500 ($12.50) to DZD3,000 yearly. Insurance premiums, however, are currently collected either quarterly or semi-annually.
Insurers have not received clarification from the authorities so far, Mr Hassan Khelifati, vice president of the insurance association, told the newspaper Echorouk. Insurers are also lobbying the authorities to compensate them for their tax collection effort by giving them a one-third share of the tax. But they have yet to receive a direct response to this request. M
