The number of road traffic deaths in the UAE has fallen by 34.2% in five years, down from 712 in 2014 to 468 in 2018, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Interior.
The statistics also showed that the number of serious traffic accidents decreased by 24.1%, down from 4,895 in 2014 to 3,712 in 2018, despite a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the nation’s roads, reported the Emirates News Agency.
Distracted driving was one of the main causes for road deaths during the third quarter of 2018, in addition to excessive speeding and lack of courtesy to other road users. In 2018, 13% of traffic accident fatalities were due to distracted driving.
The UAE is working to develop and improve traffic rules and safety by focusing on several factors, the most important of which include traffic control, awareness, engineering procedures, medical services and ambulances, as well as traffic safety education. M
