Gross insurance premiums in Jordan expanded robustly by JOD39.4 million (US$55.6 million) to JOD254.7 million in 2006, representing an increase of 18% compared to 2005, according to data released by the Insurance Commission of Jordan (IC).
General insurance premiums reached JOD230.1 million while life insurance premiums amounted to JOD24.6 million last year. During the same period, gross claims increased by 23% to JOD153.3 million.
In total, there were 521 insurance service providers operating in the Jordanian market last year, including 412 insurance agents, 45 insurance brokers, 36 loss adjusters and nine actuaries. The Commission also licensed four reinsurance brokers, five consultants, and 10 companies which administer expenses and medical insurance services.
