Two-thirds (65%) of residential properties in Istanbul, making up approximately 4.15m homes, have taken up mandatory earthquake insurance, according to data released data by the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (TCIP).
Compulsory earthquake coverage, provided by the TCIP, stood at 61.90% in densely populated Istanbul before the 6 February devastating earthquake.
Notably, the districts in Istanbul considered to be at the highest risk of seismic activity, as identified by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), have played a pivotal role in driving up these insurance figures, reported the newspaper Sabah Daily.
Out of Istanbul’s 2.7m insured residences, a substantial 1.2m are concentrated within these 15 districts, underscoring the proactive stance of residents and authorities in these high-risk zones. There are a total of 35 districts in Istanbul. M
