A government body has announced that it aims to provide the entire population of the country of about 36m with basic health insurance by the end of 2022.
The National Health Insurance Agency said in a report, “The rate of basic health coverage (health insurance) for the population increased from 16% in 2005 to 70.2% in 2020, that represents a total of 25.2m beneficiaries. The goal is to reach 100% of Morocco’s population by the end of 2022.”
This will be carried out by integrating 11m non-salaried workers and 11m current beneficiaries of Regime d’Assistance Mddicale (RAMED) who will switch to Assurance Maladie Obligatoire (AMO) before the end of 2022.
RAMED is a subsidised medical assistance plan for those in the low-income bracket. AMO is a scheme that provides full and comprehensive health coverage, including for childbirth, medical/surgical hospitalisation and childcare up to the age of 12, medical devices and implants required for medical and surgical procedures, refundable medicines and prosthetic devices.
Last November, the Moroccan government approved health insurance for those in various professions, such as merchants, traditional craftsmen, and entrepreneurs. M
