Turkey: Govt to make elevator insurance cover compulsory

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | May 2018

The Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology is working to make it compulsory for building owners to take up insurance on elevators, covering against death or bodily injury due to elevator accidents.

In addition, health expenses incurred due to elevator accidents will be covered by insurance, according to local media reports.

Data from the Ministry show that there are over 477,000 elevators in the country. The proportion of elevators that fail to comply with regulation has been found to be over 30%, based on audits conducted.

The Ministry’s work on liability insurance related to elevators is not only aimed at building owners or apartment managers, but also entities that maintain, install and repair elevators. M
