Tunisia: Listed insurers see 8% rise in premiums in 2016

Premiums generated by listed insurers in Tunisia reached TND643 million (US$278.7 million) in 2016, an increase of 7.9% compared to 2015.
Tunisia’s biggest insurer STAR (Societe Tunisienne d’Assurance et de Reassurance) took the largest share of 51.5% of the total premiums of listed insurers in 2016, followed by ASTREE, with 20.3%, according to an analysis by the securities house BH Invest.
The non-life segment holds the higher share of total premiums in the listed sector, with more than 87% of the total premiums. STAR is the market leader with a volume of TND318 million or 57% of the listed sector in 2016.
Life insurance accounted for only 12% of premiums in the listed sector, an improvement of 192 basis points compared with 2015. Assurances Salim is the leader in this sector, with premiums of TND28.1 million in 2016, representing 37.5% of the total premiums in this sector among listed insurers.
