Several insurers and healthcare companies in Egypt have formed a joint committee to deal with the soaring costs of medical services and the government is poised to introduce a new universal health insurance scheme.
The joint committee is led by Mr Abd El-Raouf Kotb, Chairman of the Insurance Federation of Egypt, and Mr Ehab al-Magd, Chairman of the Egyptian Healthcare Management Society, reported Net Press.
Mr al-Magd said that it was agreed that the joint committee would represent all companies from the insurance and healthcare management sectors which had participated in a meeting in early January.
He added that the meeting also agreed to form two subcommittees.
One subcommittee will be formed by the heads of the medical insurance departments of 12 insurers. It would undertake the necessary studies related to underwriting medical insurance and pricing, taking into account the steady increases in the prices of medical services. The committee will oversee preparations for the first actuarial study on medical insurance, as well as address the fight against fraud in this class of business.
The second sub-committee will be responsible for contracts made between insurers and medical service providers, focusing on the prices of these services.
The meeting was attended by representatives of insurers, including Misr Insurance, Egyptian Saudi Insurance House, and AXA Egypt, and those of medical services companies like Prime Health, Platinum Healthcare and Diamond Medical Service.
