Turkey: Almost 81% of registered vehicles have mandatory cover

Of the 20.8 million vehicles registered in Turkey at the end of September, 16.8 million vehicles or 80.8% were covered by compulsory auto insurance, according to data released by the Insurance Information Centre (SBM).
The highest compulsory motor insurance take-up rates in Turkey were in Tunceli which lies in the eastern part of the country and which had a 95.1% take-up rate and Istanbul, where the rate was 93.8%, reported the Insurance Gazette citing SBM data.
According to the data, the 10 cities in the country with the highest compulsory traffic insurance coverage reported that more than 88% of the vehicles registered in these cities were insured.
The Turkish Statistical Institute estimates that at the end of September, 53.4% of the total 20.8 million registered vehicles were automobiles, 16.3% trucks, 14.4% motorcycles and the rest comprised other trucks, minibuses, buses and special purpose vehicles.
