Sompo Canopius names CEO for Asia Pac & MENA
Sompo Canopius has appointed Mr Mark Newman as CEO of Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa. Based in Singapore, Mr Newman reports to Mr Mike Duffy, Chief Underwriting Officer. 
 
   Mr Newman’s appointment to this newly created role is part of the company’s focus on expanding and improving this business, including looking at broader geographical coverage.
 
   Mr Newman has 30 years of experience in insurance and has lived in Asia for the past 16. He entered insurance with Sedgwick in London and then held roles with Arab Commerical Enterprises in Jeddah and Alexander Howden in London and Mexico before moving to J&H as Senior Vice President in 1991. 
 
   After the company was bought by Marsh, Mr Newman became leader of the international property team, followed by roles as head of GC Fac Japan and GC Fac Asia Pacific, before being appointed Chief Operating Officer & Head of GCFac Asia Pacific, Guy Carpenter in 2007. From 2008 to 2015 he was CEO of Catlin Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. He was most recently Head of Asia & Deputy CEO Asia Pacific XL Catlin. 
 
 
XL Catlin’s insurance operation appoints Head of Claims EMEA
XL Catlin’s insurance operation has appointed Ms Elina Selin as Head of Claims for EMEA region. In her new role, she will be responsible for leading XL Catlin’s claims teams in 12 countries. 
 
   Ms Selin joins XL Catlin from Zurich Insurance Group where she most recently held the position of Claims Business Partner, overseeing their Global Corporate European Middle East and Africa claims. She brings with her over 30 years of experience in a variety of claims management roles held across the EMEA region, including Sweden and Switzerland. 
 
 
New CEO for Aon Benfield Middle East 
Aon Benfield has promoted Mr Amr Sartawi to CEO for the Middle East region, following the departure of Mr Ahmed Rajab. 
Mr Sartawi has over 10 years of experience in the reinsurance industry. Having been with the company since 2012, he was formerly head of treaty reinsurance business for the Middle East at Aon Benfield. 
 
   Prior to joining Aon Benfield, he was Regional Manager & Underwriter for Middle East at Trust Re Bahrain. He started his career at Arig in Bahrain.
 
 
Bahrain: Succession in Arig’s Group Management Team
Arab Insurance Group (Arig) has announced the retirement of Mr Andreas Weidlich (General Manager - Reinsurance), Mr Nagarajan Kannan (General Manager - Finance & Administration) and Mr Salah Al Maraj (Assistant General Manager - Reinsurance) effective 31 December 2016, all having attained the retirement age. They have been long-serving members with Arig and each has vastly contributed to its growth, prominence and professionalism.  
 
   As part of its planned succession, Arig has appointed Mr Firas El Azem as the new General Manager - Reinsurance, Mr Samuel Verghese as Deputy General Manager - Finance & Administration and Mr Rachid Mechouet as Assistant General Manager - Reinsurance. All the appointments will take effect from 1 January 2017. 
 
   Mr El Azem brings over 25 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance. He started his professional career with Munich Re and later became the CEO of its Kuala Lumpur branch before moving back to the Middle East as General Manager of a number of takaful companies in Syria, Kuwait and most recently Arig’s subsidiary, Takaful Re. 
 
   Mr Verghese joined Arig in 1997 and has been heading the Finance Department as Director since 2008. Mr Mechouet has more than 25 years of reinsurance experience having worked with CCR (Algeria), Arig (Tunis) and Med Re (London) before coming back to Arig in 2010 as Director - Claims & Technical Accounts.
 
 
Oman: Dhofar Insurance relieves CEO of duties
Mr Taher Al Heraki has been relieved of his duties as the CEO of Dhofar Insurance Company, with immediate effect.
Dhofar Insurance made the announcement in a filing on the Muscat Securities Market on 1 September.
