Syrian Airlines Holding Company has signed its first reinsurance contract with international reinsurers with high credit ratings in the Lloyd's market, the world's biggest specialist insurance marketplace.
The contract was sealed through the Syrian General Insurance Corporation, reported Syrian Arab News Agency, the official national news agency.
The contract was signed in Damascus on 25 June 2026, under the auspices of Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh in his capacity as Chairman of the Insurance Supervisory Authority, and in the presence of the CEO of the Syrian Aviation Holding Company, Anwar Akkad.
The overseas reinsurance was secured after a hiatus of 15 years. Syria was mired in a civil war that lasted for 13 years, beginning in March 2011 and ending in December 2024. International sanctions on Syria, imposed from 2011 onwards by the US, the EU, and the UK in response to the civil war and human rights abuses by the Bashar al-Assad regime , were permanently lifted following the collapse of the Assad government in December 2024.
