President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday launched Tamini General Insurance, Uganda's first Islamic insurance company.
Tamini is a member of the Salaam Group, an ethical finance conglomerate with operations in Uganda, Djibouti, Kenya and Malaysia.
A sister institution, Salaam Bank, was launched in March 2024 as the first licensed Islamic bank in Uganda. The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda officially licensed Tamini in November 2025. These developments followed legislative changes that provide for Shariah-compliant financial services.
According to a report by the online news platform, Nile Post, President Museveni indicated that the launch of the takaful company was at the right time because Uganda is a growing market with its population forecast to grow from 45m currently to 100m by 2050.
