Algeria:Insurance brokers set out key priorities: Innovation, Inclusion, and Compliance

| 24 Sep 2025

The Algerian Union of Insurance Brokers (UACA) has set out four strategic directions to modernise the brokerage sector.

They are:

  • Digital innovation: increased use of artificial intelligence, big data and digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and reach a wider customer base.

  • The digitalisation of insurance platforms: a key lever for expanding inclusion and offering better coverage to different categories of the population.

  • The promotion of life insurance: perceived as a strategic tool for economic and social stability, beyond simple protection against risks.

  • Compliance with international rules: strengthening the role of brokers in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, through internal control mechanisms and ongoing employee training.

The priorities were highlighted at a meeting, organised by the UACA on 22 September 2025 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Finance, to exchange views with the various actors in the field, to arrive at concrete recommendations which could, subsequently, be communicated to the regulatory authorities.

Mr Lahouari Seghier, president of the UACA, said that the number of brokers increased from five in 2003 to around 60 today, covering several wilayas of the country.

In a speech delivered at the meeting, the president of the Algerian Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (UAR), Mr Youcef Benmicia, said that insurance brokers "constitute a pivotal link in the process of marketing insurance products alongside insurance companies", reported Algeria Press Service.

He stressed that brokers are also a driving force for innovation in insurance, through the development of new products and the expansion of the insurable product base, noting that their contribution to the turnover of the national insurance market reached DZD60bn ($464.5m) in 2024.

At the end of the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the UACA and the UAR. The two sides agreed to stage joint activities. The UACA also signed separate cooperation pacts with the Algerian Federation of Consumers as well as with the School of Advanced Insurance Studies.
