The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) plans to introduce a new international system for health insurance, the Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) classification, in February 2020, according to the agency's director general, Mr Hamaid Al Qatami.
The system will calculate the cost of medical procedures for each insured patient and use algorithms to fix base fees for treatments of a range of health conditions.
He said that the medical costs have become a burden to insurers and the establishment of new controls is needed.
Mr Saleh Al Hashimi, CEO of Dubai Health Insurance Corporation, explained that the aim of the DRG system is to ensure quality of service, prevent duplication of health services, reduce medical treatment costs, as well as regulate and control the dispensing of medicines.
He explained that the system will be applied to inpatients in hospitals under the Dubai Health Authority. It will be monitored for 18 months, and then applied to outpatients.
Eventually, both private and public hospitals across Dubai will be covered by the system, which streamlines payment protocols. The medical billing system in Dubai will be completely changed by 2027 .
