Turkiye:Motor insurers report record third-party liability insurance losses

All insurance companies that offer mandatory motor third-party liability (MTPL) insurance reported losses in the branch in the first half of this year, according to data from the Insurance Association of Turkiye (TSB).

The losses from MTPL insurance ( also called traffic insurance) amounted to TRY23.9bn ($579m) in 1H2025, which is a record and 136% higher than the TRY10.1bn posted for 1H2024.

Traffic insurance is the biggest branch of business in the Turkish market in terms of premiums. In 1H2025, the traffic insurance premiums totalled TRY143.9bn, with year-on-year nominal growth of 55.8% and real growth of 15.4%.

The insurance sector generated technical profits of TRY81.9bn from insurance activities in 1H2025, surging by 72% year on year. 

Investment income totalled TRY26.1bn in 1H2025, increasing by 74.6% compared to the corresponding half in 2024.

Non-life insurance production increased by 47.9% year-over-year, while life insurance saw a strong 81.2% growth. In real terms, non-life insurance saw a 9.5% increase, while life insurance rose by 34.1%. Participation insurance or takaful grew by 53.7% year on year, reaching TRY32.5bn in the first half of 2025.
