Kuwait-headquartered Gulf Insurance Group is establishing Ahalina Microinsurance Company through its subsidiary GIG Egypt.
Aside from GIG Egypt, shareholders of the proposed microinsurance joint venture will consist of a microfinance company in the Egyptian market and several other investors, reported Amwal Alghad.
The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) is reviewing the new company's application for the initial approval of a microinsurance licence.
Preparations for the establishment of Ahalina take place at a time when microinsurance business is expanding in the Egyptian market, driven by increased demand for insurance products tailored to microenterprises and low-income individuals.
The FRA issued a decision to increase the maximum insurance coverage limit for microinsurance activity to EGP390,000 ($8,300), up from about EGP312,500 previously. In a statement released on 2 February 2026, the FRA said the decision aims to bolster the sustainability and growth of microenterprises.
The FRA also recently announced that it was studying applications from two microinsurance companies for initial approval for a licence. Ahalina Microinsurance Company is one of the two.
In mid-December 2025, the FRA approved the establishment of Sawa Company as the first microinsurance company within the framework of the Unified Insurance Law. The shareholders of Sawa are AXA Life Insurance Egypt and Post Investment Company, the investment arm of Egypt Post.
The Unified Insurance Law, passed in mid-2024, includes a chapter that covers microinsurance business, a first for insurance legislation in the country.
