The late Dr Mustafa Rajab

Iraqi insurance and reinsurance veteran Dr Mustafa Rajab passed away on 15 June in Abu Dhabi at the age of 96.

With over six decades of insurance and reinsurance expertise in the region, Dr Rajab was one of the main founders of Iraq Reinsurance Company (Iraq Re) in 1960 and served as its general manager until 1980. After that, he relocated and held several high-profile positions in the Arab region, including general manager of Arab Reinsurance Company and CEO of UAE’s Al Dhafra Insurance Company in the late 1980s.

During his career, he also served as a consultant to the Emirates Insurance Association and as a member of the committee of experts of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva between 1970 and 1980.

Dr Rajab received his first degree in law from Baghdad University in 1948 and his doctorate in philosophy in law from Geneva University in 1958. He was a prolific writer and authored several books on insurance from technical, legal and administrative angles.

His son Mr Ahmed Rajab, founder and CEO of Shields Insurance Brokers, said, “He lived his life fully without compromises and always fought for what he believed in with very strong principles. He loved life more than anyone I know and was very proud to be able to live independently. He was still driving at the age of 96. Over the last six months, he fought to stay alive even as his weakening body betrayed him, to finish his last book about insurance and see it published.”

Dr Rajab will be buried in Baghdad as per his wishes.

We at Middle East Insurance Review extend our most sincere condolences to our friend Mr Ahmed Rajab and his family for their loss.
