Turkey:Road accidents and fatalities fall in number in 2019

Turkish roads saw 1.17m motor accidents last year, a number which was 5% lower than in 2018, according to data published by the government agency Turkey Statistics Institute (TurkStat).

Of the total number of auto accidents last year, 174,896 accidents resulted in death or injury, a decrease of 6.2% over 2018.

The total number of people killed in motor accidents plunged by 18% to 5,473 last year compared to 2018.

42.7% of the 5,473 persons killed in traffic accidents in 2019 were drivers; 34.1% were passengers and 23.2% were pedestrians.

75.9% of road accidents involving death or injury occurred in inhabited areas while 24.1% took place in uninhabited areas.

Causes

Driver fault was the main reason for traffic accidents, accounting for 88.0% of the total number of motor accidents. The other causes were:

  • 8.2% - pedestrian fault
  • 2.0% - vehicle fault
  • 1.3% - passenger fault
  • 0.5% - road conditions.

Time of day

Of the number of road accidents involving death or injury last year, 67.8% occurred in daytime; 29.4% at night and 2.8% occurred at twilight.

Number of vehicles involved in an accident

47.5% of accidents resulting in death or injury involved two vehicles; 46.6% involved single vehicles and 5.9% involved more than two vehicles.

The total number of vehicles involved in accidents that resulted in death or injury last year stood at 280,700, 1.3% higher than in 2018: For 2019, the types of vehicles involved in accidents comprised:

  • 53.1% - cars
  • 14.9% - small trucks
  • 6.3% - motorcycles
  • 3.0% - minibuses
  • 2.3% - trucks
  • 2.2% - buses
  • 2.1% - tractor trucks
  • 1.0% - tractors
  • 5.2% - other vehicles.

In Turkey 7.6 accidents involving death or injury occurred per thousand vehicles last year.
