Turkey:About half of registered motorcycles lack insurance

10 Feb 2020

About 1.84m or 55% of the total number of motorcycles registered with the traffic authorities are covered by insurance, estimates the Turkey Statistical Institute.

The total number of motorcycles in the country stands at around 3.34m or 14.4% of the total number of 23.16m vehicles registered with the traffic authorities, reported Insurance Gazette.

TurkStat's accident reports for the last 10 years reveal a sharp increase in the number of motorcycle accidents. The number of accidents reported in 2009 when the population of motorcycles stood at 2m was 20,000. This number approached an annual average of 45,000 when the motorcycle population reached 3m in 2018-2019.

According to TurkStat, motorcycles account for 15% of traffic accidents in the country.

Separately, Auto King, a leading auto maintenance and repair brand, warns drivers about increased accident rates in the winter season. The risk of a traffic accident in winter is six times higher than in summer, due to ice on the road, decreased visibility due to adverse weather conditions, and not using the vehicle according to the road condition. Therefore, preparing the vehicle for the winter is of great importance in the prevention of accidents.

Yearly, an average of 5,000 to 6,000 people die in traffic accidents in Turkey and 100.000 to 200,000 are injured. 29% of accidents are caused by collision with a vehicle and 16% involve pedestrians. The main reason for traffic accidents is human error or fault.
