The Jordan Insurance Federation (JIF) has said that it is all for granting discounts on motor premiums to drivers with a clean traffic record. To obtain the discount, customers have to submit the required documents in accordance with the regulations and legislation in force issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
However, at the start of this month, the Greater Amman Municipality made a unilateral decision to stop providing drivers with the required paper record attesting to their accident-free record, reported Al Ghad. This was decided without coordination with the JIF.
The insurance body called on the municipality to restore the previous system of providing formal hard-copy verification of a clean traffic record, with its logo and authorised stamp.
JIF said in a statement that it was the party that had proposed the discount for accident-free drivers. Legislative amendments in 2010 to the mandatory motor insurance system provided for this feature for the first time in the Kingdom.
The association pointed out that the Instructions for Compulsory Vehicle Insurance Premiums and the 2010 amendment provide that mandatory insurance premiums for Jordanian vehicles that did not commit any traffic violation during the previous insured period shall be reduced by 15% at the time of the renewal of the policy. The insurance applicant is required to provide proof that the vehicle was not involved in any traffic violation during the period between the effective date of the mandatory insurance policy and the date of renewal.
