Pakistan: Regulator issues first digital general takaful licence

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Jun 2026

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan has taken major steps to promote innovation and digital transformation in Pakistan’s financial sector by issuing the country’s first Shariah-compliant digital general takaful operator licence.

The licence was granted to First Digital Takaful Company Limited (FDTL), which is a subsidiary of MedIQ Private Limited.

The takaful operator, in a post on its LinkedIn account, said, “Our mission is to make insurance more accessible, affordable, and scalable through technology. FDTL leverages digital distribution, embedded partnerships, and API-driven integrations to reach customers where they already are, enabling protection at the point of need.”

The reforms are part of the SECP’s broader strategy to modernise Pakistan’s financial regulatory framework, facilitate innovation, encourage foreign participation, and strengthen digital regulatory infrastructure. M
