The Inter-Arab Automobile Insurance Card (Orange Card) was launched in a digital format on 1 April 2022, dispensing with hard copies, said Tunisian Unified Automobile Bureau head Ahmed Hadroug.
With the electronic format of the Orange Card becoming operational, drivers who cross borders can present their insurance certificates on an electronic device. Verification of the authorities will be carried out via QR codes.
The General Arab Insurance Federation (GAIF), in cooperation with regional offices, will launch the Orange Card electronic issuance system. GAIF manages the Orange Card system and the Unified Automobile Bureau is the Orange Card regional office in Tunisia.
Mr Hadroug said that the bureau has completed all the technical and organisational preparations for the operation of the new electronic system. There will be a transitional period until 30 June 2022, during which operations will be carried out in parallel on both the electronic and physical systems.
The Orange Card system, which provides evidence of motor third-party liability insurance, aims to facilitate the movement of vehicles and people between the Arab countries that are signatories to the arrangement.
The new electronic system was developed to keep pace with modern technological developments and to facilitate insurance underwriting and the movement of citizens across borders, in addition to accelerating the process of confirming insurance coverage when traffic accidents occur, controlling card fraud and automating accident notification processes and easing follow-up work between regional offices.
