Saudi Arabia: Umrah pilgrims covered by new comprehensive insurance policy

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Feb 2020

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has announced that the number of a new comprehensive insurance policy issued to foreign umrah pilgrims in the first 10 days of this year reached almost 180,000, including more than 37,000 effective policies, according to a report by Saudi Press Agency.

The policy, launched on 1 January, covers pilgrims for hospitalisation and medical expenses, delay and cancellations of trips, death and injury suffered in accidents and disasters. The insurance coverage is linked to the visitor’s visa, and the relevant policy becomes effective upon the arrival of the umrah pilgrim in the kingdom. The insurance cover is valid for 30 days and provides coverage of up to SAR100,000 ($26,700) per person.

The insurance policy is sold by Tawuniya. The insurer signed an agreement with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in December last year to provide insurance services to umrah and hajj pilgrims for four years.

From the start of the current umrah season last September to early January, official statistics show that more than 2.7m umrah visas have been issued. M
