Egypt: Govt denies privatising new health insurance system

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Jun 2019

The Egyptian government has issued a statement to deny reports on the privatising of the country’s new comprehensive health insurance system. The cabinet information centre explained that it has contacted the Ministry of Health which affirmed that no privatisation for the new system is being planned, according to Egypt Today.

The ministry explained that an agreement was signed with some major private hospitals with the aim of serving the new system, including the transfer of knowledge to the ministry’s cadres. It said such reports were meant to stir public discontent and urged the Egyptian people to ignore such rumours.

Meanwhile, the first batch of Egyptian doctors has left for the UK to be trained on the new health insurance system, which is set to be implemented first in Port Said governorate in July. M
