A total of 7,289 road crashes were reported in the first six months of this year, according to provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department.
The motor accidents resulted in 1,504 deaths and injured 8,300 persons, with 12,354 vehicles involved. The report also indicated that 1,301 pedestrians were knocked down across the country.
On average, the NRSA said that road crashes claim eight lives daily, with 40 crashes occurring nationwide each day. Furthermore, 46 individuals suffer injuries daily, and 69 vehicles and motorcycles are involved in accidents every day.
The NRSA calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased public education to help curb the high number of road accidents across the country.

According to the World Health Organization, Ghana ranks within the 10 countries with the highest road traffic death rates (per 100,000 population) in Africa. The top 10 countries are Guinea (37.4 per 100,000 population); Guinea-Bissau (30.50); Zimbabwe (29.9); Comoros (29.0); Kenya (28.2); Burkina Faso (27.8); Chad (26.4); Central African Republic (25.9); Ghana (25.9) and Niger (24.9).
