Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) has sealed its first-ever reinsurance agreement with an African export credit agency (ECA).
The agreement is with Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC), according to a statement released by NEXI, a Japanese governmental financial institution.
Under this agreement, NEXI will reinsure ECIC’s export credit insurance for Japanese companies based in South Africa when they export to third countries, including African nations.
The agreement was unveiled at the MOU signing ceremony held at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development on 21 August 2025, in the presence of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
South Africa has the largest number of Japanese-affiliated companies in Africa and serves as a hub for exports to other African countries. Promoting intra-African trade also contributes to the advancement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
ECIC and NEXI will actively support the export business expansion of Japanese-affiliated companies in South Africa, as well as support third countries, including those in Africa, the NEXI statement said.
