Bahrain:Idea mooted for compulsory insurance coverage for use of robots

| 09 Jul 2025

Insurance coverage should be made mandatory by law for robot users, covering all types of damages that may arise from their use, according to an academic.

Dr Wafa Janahi, associate professor of civil law at the College of Law at the University of Bahrain, raised this proposal at a lecture on the topic, “Civil Liability for Errors Resulting from Robot Actions, reported Al Watan News. The lecture was organised by the Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission.

She said that robots today can engage in discussions and answer questions, behave like humans, and display facial expressions and emotions similar to those of humans.

However, insurance expert Ali Al-Dulaimi said that the small size of the market in Bahrain does not permit the proposal to be implemented at present.

He told Al Watan News, "I don't expect insurance companies to consider insuring robots or AI errors, even though almost all companies use such technology in their businesses today. This is because the issue is linked to supply and demand. When the market grows, we can discuss this trend."
