Zurich General Takaful Indonesia (Zurich Syariah) has reported growth in gross contribution income to more than IDR1.4bn ($86,000) from travel insurance products during the 2025 hajj period.
The Saudi Arabian government set Indonesia's 2025 hajj quota at 221,000 people, making the Southeast Asian nation the country with the world’s largest hajj quota.
The growth of contributions at Zurich Syariah was also from umrah travel insurance products. The company recorded a gross contribution growth of more than 30% from umrah travel insurance.
The company’s president director Mr Hilman Simanjuntak said in a statement, “The growth reflects public trust in Shariah-based protection, especially for sacred pilgrimages such as the hajj and umrah.”
Zurich Syariah said that it has expanded partnerships with hajj and umrah travel operators as part of its agency distribution strategy. Despite the growth in this line of business, it constitutes a tiny fraction of the total contributions of the takaful operator.
Zurich Syariah is also actively promoting integrated protection products that combine umrah trips with visits to countries near Saudi Arabia, such as Turkiye, the UAE and Morocco.
Globally, Indonesia is the country with the largest number of Muslims. The quota of 221,000 hajj pilgrims remains insufficient. With over 5.5m Indonesians currently registered to undertake the hajj, the estimated waiting time is between 20 and 40 years.
More than 1.67m pilgrims from around the world performed the hajj this year, according to data from Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Statistics. This year's hajj took place on 4-9 June.
