A recent survey has revealed that almost half (49%) of the participating companies have already replaced workers with ChatGPT, the AI tool that emerged on the scene only in November 2022.
The survey conducted by the web-portal ResumeBuilder.com in February 2023 involved 1,000 US business leaders and found that an additional 30% of the respondents are planning to use the AI chatbot in the near future.
Companies have deployed the programme for various purposes including writing code, customer support and hiring. Of the companies currently using it, 93% plan to expand its use in their organisations. Over one fourth of the companies claimed that using it has already saved them over $75,000.
Of the companies planning to use it, 85% said they will start doing so within the next six months. The survey found that 63% of the industry leaders feel that within five years ChatGPT can result in significant layoffs.
Among the business leaders whose companies plan to use it, only 9% said it will ‘definitely’ lead to layoffs, while 19% said it will ‘probably’ lead to layoffs. Despite concerns about job displacement, 90% of business leaders believe that experience with it is a beneficial skill for job seekers.
The majority of business leaders, however, believe that AI technology will create new job opportunities in the future.
Overall, the survey indicated that the programme has become a popular tool for companies, with many seeing its benefits in a variety of areas. There are, however, also concerns about its impact on jobs, and business leaders will need to carefully consider how to balance the benefits of AI technology with its potential social consequences. M
