Malaysia: Govt mulls health takaful for low- and middle-income citizens

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Sep 2018

The government is studying the possibility of introducing health takaful coverage for low- and middle-income Malaysians, said Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

The detailed study on health takaful protection would pave the way for coverage that allows the bottom 40% of Malaysians to have more access to health, treatment, medication and medical interventions, reported The Malaysian Reserve.

“The takaful-based options will emphasise the financing of cost-effective treatment models such as daily or daycare treatments and inpatient treatments, among others,” Dr Dzulkefly said in Parliament.

He was responding to a question from a lawmaker who queried the latest development regarding the implementation of the country’s National Healthcare Scheme.

“We are looking at quality healthcare benefits which will focus more on health screening, preventive activities as well as education and health promotion, especially for non-infectious diseases and chronic diseases at outpatient levels,” Dr Zulkefly said. M
