UAE: Abuse accounts up to 15% of health premiums

Abuse of health services cost 10-15% of total collected premiums, according to insurance industry players.
 
With total health insurance premiums reaching AED19.4bn ($5.3bn) in the local market, a 15% rate would equal AED2.9bn, reported Emirates Today.
 
There is a tendency to encourage overtreatment and overuse of health services. The sources noted that some medical procedures that are carried out are not necessary and represent a large part of abuse.
 
The annual report of the UAE Insurance Authority for 2017 showed that the total claims paid in the health sector amounted to AED15.1bn, while the claims paid to the auto sector stood at AED5.5bn. The total claims paid in all branches of insurance last year reached AED37.5bn.
 
The total premiums written in the health segment amounted to AED19.4bn. The share of national companies amounted to AED14.4bn, or 74.2%, while foreign entities stood at AED5bn or 25.8%. M
