Tunisia: 90% of motorbikes are uninsured

Around 90% of motorcycles in Tunisia are not insured and 19% of road accident victims are bikers, according to figures from the Tunisian Federation of Insurance Companies (FTUSA).
Motorcycles in Tunisia rank as the second leading cause of traffic accidents, reported Maghrebi Economist citing the data.
Bikers rank third in terms of the number of deaths in road accidents. In such accidents, 17% of fatalities are motorcyclists who also represent 14.5% of the wounded.
It should be noted that motorcycles do not have registration which makes it difficult to identify them.
“Wearing helmets and identifying motorcycles and bikers is of great importance for better insurance against road accidents,” said Mr Kamel Chibani, executive director of FTUSA.
In Tunisia, the use of helmets is not widespread among bikers. Of the 2m motorcycles, only 140,000 motorcycles are insured.
There is therefore a need to increase the awareness of motorcyclists about the importance of insurance and the use of helmets to reduce human injury and property damage. M
