As many as 336 people were killed in 2,100 road accidents in Oman in the first half of the year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information.
For the 12 months of last year, 6,276 road accidents were reported, leading to more than 675 deaths. More than four million traffic fines were
imposed last year, ranging between OMR10 (US$26) and OMR50, reported Gulf News citing figures made available by the authorities.
Seeking to improve road safety, the Omani government has implemented new rules since September that introduce hefty increases in fines for several traffic violations.
For example, motorists using their mobile phones while driving or other electronic equipment may face a 10-day jail term and be slapped with a fine not exceeding OMR300.
For the first time, motorists who neglect warnings to avoid wadis during heavy rain will face up to three months in jail apart from a fine of OMR500.
