MEIR anniversary - 10 years, through thick and thin

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Apr 2016

When MEIR was launched in 2006, it was a time of high oil prices and relative economic stability. The DIFC and the QFC had just been launched and were out in full force to woo global players. And, lured by promises of tax breaks and the booming potential of the region, they were starting to come.

It is a vastly different scene that confronts actors on the MENA stage today. The Israel-Hezbollah War of 2006 has now been overshadowed by the Arab Spring, rise of ISIS and Yemen civil war. In place of the 2008 global financial crisis is an oil price slump, slowdown in China and economic uncertainties.

In the regional (re)insurance market, some familiar and even well-established names have come and gone, although in sum, the number of players has proliferated over the last 10 years – indicating the opportunities that are still present.

MEIR has developed along with the region. Each monthly edition covers more than news and trends. It includes insights on market developments, interviews with industry leaders and regulators, as well as analysis of the challenges and opportunities for existing players or those looking to enter the market.

From being a mere monthly publication, we now produce eDaily news from Sunday to Thursday, publish directories serving as comprehensive guides to the region, and organise conferences spanning various topical issues, from motor to healthcare to political risks.

We have launched the MENA Insurance CEO Club (MICC) as a think tank for the regional insurance industry, while continuing to provide secretariat services for this by-invitation-only Club.

Since 2014, we have launched the Middle East Insurance Industry Awards (MIIA) to recognise and salute excellence in the market. And since our inception, we have supported key regional events such as the GAIF and FAIR Conferences as a media partner.

We have ridden through the ups and downs of the past decade, supporting the region by meeting its appetite for timely news and reports, and by being a mouthpiece for the industry as it gains greater prominence on the world stage.

Here’s to many more years of a fruitful partnership!
