Takaful News - Saudi Arabia: Visitor health insurance plan excludes terrorism

Insurance companies will be exempt from providing visitors to Saudi Arabia with medical cover for terrorism-related incidents, riots, strikes, and nuclear accidents, according to the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI).
The regulatory body overseeing medical insurance also stated that companies would not have to pay for the shipment of the body of the deceased in such incidents to his or her home country.
Earlier this year, the CCHI endorsed a visitor health insurance scheme for those wishing to obtain medical insurance during their visit to the country, with treatment coverage of up to SAR100,000 (US$26,700). The insurance cover is a prerequisite for all wishing to obtain required visas for visits to Saudi Arabia.
The CCHI also stated that insurance firms need not provide cover for acts of foreign aggression (declared or not), radioactive contamination from nuclear fuel or waste, and injuries from a person’s participation in armed acts or police operations.
Also not covered is injury due to epidemics, accidents, chemical or biological reactions, and work or occupational injuries.
The medical insurance for visitors covers the expenses and costs for check-ups and emergency treatment, hospitalisation and delivery cases, treatment of premature babies, injuries due to traffic accidents, kidney dialysis in emergency cases and medical evacuation within the Kingdom and outside. It does not include the cost of medicine and other requirements recommended by a doctor.
