UAE: London and Dubai join hands to develop takaful

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Nov 2015

The first overseas Islamic Insurance Association of London (IIAL) Conference, to be held on 8 November in partnership with the DIFC, will explore ways to support the UAE Islamic Economy initiative.

The IIAL was set up in London in April 2015 to promote Islamic insurance and to use the skills within the City of London and the London insurance market to drive more appetite and understanding of Islamic (re)insurance.

As part of that work, Lloyd’s Dubai encouraged the IIAL to visit the UAE and to meet with officials from both the DIFC and the Dubai Islamic Economy to see how London can help support the broader UAE Islamic Economy initiative in terms of partnership. It was then agreed that the IIAL’s first international Conference 2015 would be held on 8 November at the DIFC Conference Centre.

The half-day event aims to engage with the UAE insurance market and will feature a number of high-level presentations from the DIFC, the IIAL and some of the most senior figures in the international and Middle Eastern (re)insurance markets. These include Mr Arif Amiri, Deputy CEO of the DIFC Authority, who will deliver the welcome address. Mr Max Taylor, IIAL Chairman; Mr James Bagshawe, IIAL Director; and Mr Dave Matcham, CEO of the International Underwriting Association (IUA) are among those from the London market who will speak at the Conference.

The UK Embassy in Dubai, Lloyd’s and the DIFC have invited senior industry figures and business leaders to the Conference, which will be supported by the IUA, Lloyd’s and law firm BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem & Associates LLP. Rounding off the event will be an evening reception at The Palace Hotel.
