Middle East & Africa: Brokerslink appoints new regional manager 
Global broking business Brokerslink has appointed Mr Tiago Mora as the new regional manager for Middle East and Africa.
 
Mr Mora is a director of MDS Re and has been with MDS Group for 12 years. He has spent a number of those years developing the group’s operations in Africa and running the Angolan business. He replaces Ms Ana Cristina Borges who is relinquishing her responsibilities with Brokerslink to become board director of MDS Portugal. 
 
In the role of regional manager, Mr Mora will focus on the development and expansion of Brokerslink’s presence across the region. He will assist the independent broker partners and affiliates in 35 countries to work with other brokers across the global network to find and develop new opportunities for their clients, and support Brokerslink’s strategic insurer partners to improve their access to the Middle East and Africa.

Middle East & Africa: EC3 Brokers names regional director of treaty 
EC3 Brokers MEA has appointed Mr Serge Calfa to the newly-created role of regional director of treaty. Based in Dubai, Mr Calfa joined on 1 June from Munich Re and will report to the senior executive officer Steve Hart.
 
 Mr Calfa has more than two decades of experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry and brings with him a wealth of regional experience having worked in the Middle East since 1999. 
 
Most recently, he was a senior manager at Munich Re in Dubai, where he had worked since 2006 developing the MEA region, writing risk premiums in excess of EUR500m. 
 
Prior to this, he held various positions including head of health and personal lines for Saudi General Insurance Company and head of operations for INAYA Administration and Underwriting Agency. 
 
 He will lead on all treaty business for EC3 Brokers’ clients with a primary focus on health & life treaty, which is increasing in prominence and value in the region due to the privatisation of healthcare and ever-increasing premiums.

Middle East: Clyde & Co hires partner to head regulatory & investigations practice 
Global law firm Clyde & Co has appointed Mr Matthew Shanahan as partner in its global regulatory & investigations practice. He will be based in Dubai and will head up the practice across the Middle East.  
 
Mr Shanahan is a financial services and regulation expert with over 10 years’ experience in the Middle East. He joins from Baker McKenzie where he was a financial services and regulation partner and brings over 10 years of direct experience at regulators, having worked for three years at the UK Financial Services Authority (now FCA) and seven years at the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). 
 
Mr Shanahan specialises in advisory and contentious financial services regulation, advising banks, securities firms, other financial institutions and public sector bodies on all aspects of financial services regulation, including market abuse, FinTech, anti-money laundering and financial crime. He also advises clients on managing regulatory investigations and enforcement actions, internal investigations, crisis management, commercial disputes, corruption, bribery, and data protection matters.  

Egypt: Misr welcomes new chairman/MD 
Misr Insurance Co (Misr), the state-owned and largest insurer in Egypt, has appointed Mr Mo’men Mukhtar as its chairman and CEO with effect from June 2019. He takes over from Mr Hussein Attallah who served in this position for the past two years. 
 
Mr Mukhtar joins Misr from Saudi Re where he was the company’s chief underwriting officer since 2015. Prior to this, he worked with The Company for Cooperative Insurance (Tawuniya) in Saudi Arabia for more than 23 years. His last position with the company was general manager for property and casualty. Before that, he served as Tawuniya’s reinsurance manager for almost 13 years where his responsibilities included forging the company’s reinsurance strategy and handling agreements with reinsurance companies. 
 
An Egyptian insurance professional, Mr Mukhtar started his career with Misr as an insurance specialist in aviation in 1986. He remained with the company for three years and now returns to head its operation in Egypt and oversee its future expansion plans.

UAE: MS Amlin appoints senior marine underwriter in Dubai operations
MS Amlin, the leading global (re)insurer, has appointed Ms Mary Vogiatzidou to the role of senior marine underwriter. Ms Vogiatzidou will be based in MS Amlin’s Dubai office and will be responsible for the continued development and growth of the marine business across the MENA region. She reports to Mr David Overall, senior executive officer, MS Amlin (MENA) Limited. 
 
Ms Vogiatzidou brings more than 19 years of experience in both (re)insurance and broking, with specialist expertise in the marine market, to the role. 
 
She most recently served as a senior hull underwriter in RSA Group’s marine division. 
 
Prior to this, she served as a senior broker for marine and energy at Meridian Risk Solutions, based in London and Athens. She has also held roles as a marine and energy broker and reinsurance technician at Newman Martin and Buchan Ltd.

UAE: MetLife boosts employee benefits leadership team
MetLife has named two seasoned international leaders to its employee benefits business to further enhance its offering to intermediary partners and focused customer segments in the Gulf.
 
Ms Lilia Mokhtari joins MetLife in the Gulf as head of multinational and key accounts, while Mr Matthew Le Belenger has been appointed as head of sales for the UAE. With combined experience of more than 25 years in the insurance industry, Ms Mokhtari and Mr Le Belenger bring a wealth of local and international expertise to MetLife’s employee benefits business. 
 
Ms Mokhtari joins MetLife from MAXIS Global Benefits Network. She has extensive business development and management experience and has held many senior roles in the past including responsibility for business development in MEA, global underwriting with a focus on Middle East and Mediterranean markets and marine P&C underwriting for respectively MAXIS GBN in the UK, Generali in France and AIG in Italy. 
 
Mr Le Belenger, who joins from MetLife’s Australian business, will head up the team responsible for employee benefits sales with intermediary partners and clients in the UAE. Over the last 15 years, he has a successful track record in financial services, having worked across several business groups in Asia & Australia, including group insurance, retail, private wealth, and advice. 

UAE: Charles Taylor InsureTech continues global expansion with appointment of MD
Charles Taylor InsureTech has opened an office in Dubai to meet the growing demand for technology-related business transformation programmes in the regional insurance market.
 
The business will be led by Mr Shahid Safdar, who has been appointed as managing director for the MENA region. He joins from Takaful Emarat where he was chief digital officer, responsible for defining and executing the digital strategy transforming the company into a digital insurer.
 
Mr Safdar has extensive experience in leading business change programmes. He previously worked in senior management consultancy roles for Grant Thornton, KPMG and Satori Consulting.  
 
The move builds upon Charles Taylor InsureTech’s growth and success in the European and Latin American markets. Success in the UK has seen Charles Taylor InsureTech appointed to provide a global delegated authorities platform for Lloyd’s which is at the centre of its digital transformation programme. In Latin America, Charles Taylor InsureTech has rapidly grown to become a dominant player, acquiring leading regional insurance technology business, Inworx.
