10 pearls of wisdom from legendary Coach John Wooden

| 20 Apr 2018

John Robert Wooden (1910-2010) was the legendary head coach at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Over his years in UCLA, he oversaw the most successful rebuilding projects in US college basketball history.

As head coach of UCLA, he won 10 NCAA national championships in a 12-year period, including seven in a row.

We revisit 10 of his pearls of wisdom dished out over the years for lessons on life, leadership and success.

  1. Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.

  2. Perform at your best when your best is required. Your best is required each day.

  3. It takes time to create excellence. If it could be done quickly, more people would do it.

  4. If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.

  5. Whatever you do in life, surround yourself with smart people who’ll argue with you.

  6. Never mistake activity for achievement.

  7. Promise to be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

  8. Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

  9. If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

  10. Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.
