Kuwait: Traffic Dept ponders daily fine for non-renewal of motor insurance

Senior officials from the General Traffic Department (GTD) are considering slapping a KWD2 (US$6.57) fine for each day that a motor insurance is renewed late.
Records show that there are about 115,000 vehicles for which motor insurance has not been renewed, according to a report in Arab Times Kuwait. There are around two million vehicles in total in the country, including motorcycles.
Security sources said that other proposals include a hike in the cost of services provided by the Ministry of Interior and particularly the GTD. The proposed increase will range from 25% to 100% on services such as the issue of a driver’s licence, renewal of licence, car registration, and car registration renewal, issuing new registration books in case of loss, transfer of ownership, sale and export of vehicles.
Sources pointed out that the proposal to raise fees in general and on traffic violations in particular is still with the Fatwa and Legislation Department, and the reason for the delay in implementation is due to the lack of clarity over the jurisdiction. Some of the powers of the GTD are to be transferred to the Transport Authority. M
